Many in the church have heard the “God hates divorce” partial scripture reference but few have read it in its entirety within context.
Malachi 2:13-17 NKJV
“And this is the second thing you do: You cover the altar of the Lord with tears, With weeping and crying; So He does not regard the offering anymore, Nor receive it with goodwill from your hands. Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because the Lord has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. “For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.” You have wearied the Lord with your words; Yet you say, “In what way have we wearied Him?” In that you say, “Everyone who does evil Is good in the sight of the Lord, And He delights in them,” Or, “Where is the God of justice?””
What does the word “treacherous” mean?
“Treacherous” generally refers to betrayal, deceit, and the breaking of a sacred trust or covenant. It describes actions that show unfaithfulness to God or fellow humans, often involving a deliberate breach of loyalty for personal selfish gain or malice. Thus when a spouse emotionally abuses their mate over and over again they have betrayed them and have broken the covenant with them in the eyes of the Lord. They have tried forcing their spouse to obey them and make them a god over their spouse instead of submitting themselves to the Lord and loving their spouse like Christ and honoring and protecting them. Thus God is angry with anyone who would hurt their own spouse which then ultimately leads to divorce. Both men who abuse their wives and wives who abuse their husbands.
If the abusive spouse would humble themselves from their pride, repent for their evil behavior, forgive all who hurt them when they were growing up, get delivered from their demons then they could love their spouse like Christ and wouldn’t cause the divorce to happen.
