When the Lord or Holy Spirit wants a person to consider something that He knows you will resist He often floats an idea in your mind to get you to think about it to start to consider it. God inspires, encourages, or even provides insights and revelations to individuals who will listen to Him. Isaiah 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.”
For example if the Lord wants you to move to a new state then He could first give you a thought such as “Living in Texas would be a great place for you and your family and ultimately connect you to more godly relationships and allow you to walk in your calling.”
Or “You may want to consider leaving your current church due to leaders who are in hidden sin” and then two months later you learn the senior pastor was involved in sexual sin with the worship leader and the church collapses. Or “If everyone turned against you would you still follow Me?” and then later everyone in your life turns against you for a season of five years as the Lord was preparing you to learn to walk in a stronger reliance on Him.
Some ideas that the Lord and Holy Spirit float are things that you would never want or consider to do but would ultimately be a great thing for the Lord’s kingdom on earth. Think about Jonah.
Jonah 1:1-3 NKJV
“Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.”
Jonah knew that Nineveh was very evil as they tortured and killed people who served God so he wanted nothing to do with them and was afraid for his life. Then we know the Lord ultimately caused his ship to almost sink in a storm in the Mediterranean sea so he was thrown overboard and swallowed by a whale. Shortly after Jonah agreed to do as the Lord instructed. He then warned the people of Nineveh to repent or else God would destroy them and they actually repented and fasted and obeyed the Lord.
Nineveh was the largest city in the world for 50 years until 612 B.C. with over 120,000 people as it took 3 days to walk across it. Nineveh was eventually renamed Mosul in the country of Iraq and because of Jonah’s obedience it developed into having the most Christians of any city in Iraq. Today Mosul is the 2nd largest city in Iraq with 1.8 million people.
